Planning is key to a beautiful and functional kitchen. It takes time, research, and sometimes the help of a professional, like A Blind Pash Interiors, to ensure you get everything exactly the way you want it.

Your kitchen, needs to not only look great, it must be functional. It’s imperative that your kitchen be a room you enjoy spending time in, regardless of whether you’re cooking or cleaning.

The kitchen is an important room in a home, so if you find the prospect of carrying out a kitchen renovation completely overwhelming, maybe start by compiling a list of ideas and specific items you would like in your new kitchen.

The classic ‘work triangle’ usually works very effectively for thinking about the layout. This refers to the positioning of the sink, stove, and refrigerator in a triangular pattern.

Your kitchen needs to be the most user-friendly, functional room in your home. As part of your planning strategy, consider set-down spaces around your oven and microwave. Typically,designers will for at least 375mm of counter top on either side of a cook top and a refrigerator for this.

Allow Room To Move Around

Consider the flow of traffic in your new kitchen, typically allow 900mm wide paths through kitchens, and 1050mm paths within the cooking zone. Fridge placement should allow for easy access for people and an open dishwasher should not block off your kitchen.

Considering plumbing and electricity for your new kitchen prior to starting your kitchen renovation is very important. Will you be adding an island bench to your new design? You’ll need to allow for both plumbing and electricity to the island bench prior to laying a new floor.

Consider Placement of Electricity Points

Plan your electricity points prior to starting work and carefully consider which appliances will be used on a regular basis. Install electrical outlets on the island bench and along the splash back so you’ll have electricity wherever its needed.

Choose a Focal Point For Your Kitchen

Select your focal point - will it be the splash back, the island bench, or a statement pendant light. Make this decision and plan your bench tops and cabinets around it.

Organise Your Kitchen

Ensure the kitchen utensils you use the most are within easy reach for where you do the cooking, this also applies to cooking condiments and sauces. A ‘pot-filler’ is simply a swing-out tap that’s installed near the cook top for filling pots near where they’re heated. This is a good idea if you dislike carrying water-filled pots from the sink to the cook top.

Create a Space For Your Bins

Don't forget about placement of your bins. Having your bin/s located underneath foot preparation areas and, if possible, to have specific areas for recycling. It needs to be very easy to remove your refuse, so consider having a slide-out bin system in your new kitchen.

Consider Your Kitchen Corners

Corner cupboards typically become storage areas for all the gadgets we rarely or never use, simply because they’re awkward spots to access. If a corner cupboard is inevitable in your kitchen design, choose in-built gadgets to ensure you can easily reach items.

What About A Butler’s Pantry?

If you love entertaining and hosting dinner parties, then a Butler’s pantry is a fantastic idea for your kitchen; however, there’s the extra expense to start with, like a second sink, fridge dishwasher, etc that needs to be considered.

Buy the best quality materials you can afford. High-quality counter tops, cabinets, and appliances, last longer and are great for potential resale.
Don’t completely cover your kitchen walls with cabinetry. It can make your kitchen look heavy and uninteresting. Break up long blocks of drawers and doors by adding interesting details, like display shelving or glass doors. Alternatively, place windows or wine storage between cabinet areas.
For extensive cooking needs or those with a large family, you may want to double-up on some appliances. A mini-refrigerator or even a refrigerator drawer placed at the edge of a kitchen work-center, and a second microwave oven, can keep family members and guests in the kitchen but out of the cook’s way.

Deciding where and when to use them and choosing the right fabric may not always be straightforward. However, we provide some tips below.

Purpose and Function

The first question to consider is the purpose of the window covering. Is it meant to:

Completely block out light at night.
Filter sunlight or glare from a west-facing window in the afternoon.
Ensure privacy from overlooking neighbors.
Conceal an unattractive view.
Improve energy efficiency and retain heat.

Plantation shutters can be quite versatile. For instance, in bathrooms where privacy is paramount, they are an excellent choice. The louvres allow you to regulate the light, providing complete privacy when closed. Moreover, if you need to obscure an unsightly view or where frosted glass is necessary, they offer a sleek and streamlined look.

Fabric and Hardware Choices

The type of fabric you select should be suitable for either a curtain or a Roman blind. Also, consider the overall aesthetic of the room. Another important question is whether you want the curtains to blend in with the room or make a statement.

A decorative rod, available in various sizes and colors, can enhance the look of a curtain, but you may just prefer a functional track.

Window Style and Surrounds

Several details need to be considered, particularly relating to your specific window style. For curtains, consider the amount of 'stack back' needed to ensure the window isn't overly covered when they're open. Walls or large furniture pieces may limit the possible stack back.

Decide where to mount the track or rod, or the height for a Roman blind. This will depend on the distance between the ceiling or cornice and the window architrave.

Also, consider other factors such as ducted heating vents or hydronic wall heaters.

2024 Interior Design Trends

And just like that 2024 is upon us......

What better way to start our first Blog post than to highlight the forecast trends in Interior Design for the year ahead!

Brown Renaisance

For 2024, we will continue to see a trend of designs moving away from grays and towards browns. This shift will not only be evident in fabrics and textiles, but also in cabinetry and casegoods.

There will be a wave of chocolate neutrals in fabrics, paint colors, materials, and finishes.

Now and then - Mixing and Matching Historical Eras

Interiors will become more eclectic as people incorporate antiques and heirlooms alongside new pieces.

Antique and vintage shopping allows homeowners to establish a connection to their past. Mixing antique, classic, retro, and modern elements together to create interesting interiors..

Pause from technology

Creating a refuge from technology means taking a break from the harsh blue lights and bright touchscreens that fill our spaces. Instead, we should embrace mechanical controls such as old-school buttons and toggle switches.

Incorporating self-care sessions in the bathroom can help us reset and refresh without the constant buzz of technology. This allows us to renew our energy and stay focused.

Bold jewel colours

The appeal of gray and white kitchens and endless beige bouclé will taper off in favor of vibrance, saturation, and increasingly edgy color combinations.

The saturated hues of precious gems are giving the palette of 2024 design trends a sense of velvety mystery. People will rediscovering color in their homes, which is a welcome shift from the all-neutral palette we’ve seen for several years, and jewel tones are at the forefront of that shift.

Customised secondary space

From bulters pantrys to back kitchens, and additional wet bars, homeowners to create extensions of their kitchens with secondary spaces

With the option of being transitional or closed off behind doors, these secondary spaces can house everything from additional refrigeration and warming drawers to built-in coffee systems, wine storage, dishwashers, and more.

New Romantics

Unspool your ribbons: Romanticism isn't just for the 19th century—or the 1980s. It has transcended time and continues to inspire even in the present day.

From pillows to bedding to area rugs, we're witnessing a delightful trend of botanical inspiration seeping into various textiles. This infusion of nature's beauty adds a touch of elegance and tranquility to our everyday surroundings.

This design movement is more than just an aesthetic choice. It's a celebration of love, nostalgia, and the art of appreciating life's simple pleasures.

Stone Fruit Chic

Soft, sweet, and just a bit tart, peach and apricot are the dominant hues in the home trends color forecasts for 2024.

Pantone declared Peach Fuzz its color of the year, and describes it as “a color radiant with warmth and modern elegance.”

I'm not sure I'm ready to embrace them all, but its always interesting to see the influence of these trends have on our interiors throughtout the year.

Outdoor Fabric

When I first entered the industry, outdoor fabrics were very basic and had a distinct canvas look and feel. However, over the years, there have been significant advancements in outdoor fabric options. They have become more diverse, offering a wide range of textures, patterns, and colors.

Now, outdoor fabrics can mimic the look and feel of indoor fabrics, allowing you to create a seamless transition between your indoor and outdoor spaces.

Outdoor fabrics are usually composed of their Solution Dyed Acrylic or Polypropylene. These type of outdoor fabric have mildew-resistant properties and an ability to manage moisture and High UV and lightfastness resistance.

There is often confused between the terms ‘waterproof’ and ‘water resistant’.

First off, does ‘outdoor fabric’ necessarily also mean that the fabric is waterproof or water resistant? Waterproof items completely block the penetration of water through their fabric or material. Water-resistant fabric or material has a medium protection level, meaning that it will not completely repel water but is woven to deter it. Outdoor fabrics don't have to be 100% waterproof since they're not exposed to rain or snow all year round. However, they do need to be able to resist moisture in the air and stay strong despite repeated exposure to UV rays from sunlight.
